US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended Washington’s growing relationship with Pakistan. He compared the partnership with India’s diplomatic engagement with Iran.
Rubio made the remarks during an interview with Indian news channel Network18 on Tuesday.
Rubio Explains Why US Needs Strong Pakistan Ties
Rubio said the United States must maintain relations with countries despite political disagreements.
He explained that Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities and strategic location make diplomatic engagement important.
The secretary of state compared Washington’s relationship with Islamabad to India’s continued communication with Tehran.
He also suggested that stronger US-Pakistan ties could help address India’s security concerns.
Rubio argued that direct communication with Pakistan could help Washington discourage actions that worry New Delhi.
US-Pakistan Relations Improve Under Trump
Relations between Washington and Islamabad have strengthened during President Donald Trump’s second administration.
Both countries have expanded diplomatic discussions and strategic cooperation.
The renewed engagement follows the May 2025 military confrontation between Pakistan and India.
Trump claims his administration helped secure a ceasefire. However, India maintains that no American mediation took place.
Washington has also engaged Pakistan through high-level meetings and regional diplomatic efforts.
Rubio Criticizes Iran Over Regional Security
Meanwhile, Rubio criticized Iran’s leadership and questioned its willingness to reach diplomatic agreements.
He accused Tehran of threatening commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Rubio also highlighted risks facing international sailors and global energy supplies.
His remarks came as Pakistan continued diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The latest statements underline America’s effort to maintain relations with both Pakistan and India while addressing wider regional security challenges.
