Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set a new record with 34 foreign visits in just 18 months, averaging one trip every 30 days. The extensive travel underscores his government’s proactive diplomatic approach amid Pakistan’s ongoing economic and regional challenges.
Expanding Ties with Key Allies
From March 2024 to October 2025, Shehbaz Sharif visited several countries, with Saudi Arabia emerging as his most frequent destination. The visits to Riyadh signified Pakistan’s effort to deepen strategic and economic relations with the Kingdom.
Additionally, the premier made two visits each to China, the United States, and Egypt. These trips aimed to attract investment, strengthen trade partnerships, and reinforce Pakistan’s foreign policy balance between East and West.
Focus on Economic Recovery and Investment
Officials familiar with the matter assert that the prime minister’s foreign engagements are part of a broader strategy to revive Pakistan’s struggling economy. The focus remains on securing foreign investment, particularly from Gulf states, while maintaining ties with key development partners like China and the United States.
According to senior government sources, recent commitments from Gulf investors and renewed cooperation with Beijing and Washington demonstrate the success of this outreach. The prime minister’s office views these visits as critical for ensuring long-term financial stability and regional cooperation.
Critics Call It “Luxury Diplomacy”
However, opposition leaders have questioned the scale and frequency of Shehbaz Sharif’s foreign tours. They accuse the government of indulging in “luxury diplomacy” at a time when citizens face inflation, unemployment, and security concerns. Critics argue that such extensive travel sends the wrong message when domestic economic recovery remains uncertain.
President’s Limited Travel Highlights the Divide
In comparison, President Asif Ali Zardari has made only three official foreign visits during the same timeframe. Opposition lawmakers have pointed to this contrast as evidence of what they describe as “misplaced priorities” within the current administration.
Government Defends Strategic Outreach
Despite mounting criticism, government officials continue to defend the prime minister’s approach. They argue that in a challenging global environment, active diplomacy is essential for Pakistan’s growth and stability.
Supporters claim that Shehbaz Sharif’s travels have already yielded tangible outcomes, including foreign direct investment proposals, trade commitments, and enhanced bilateral cooperation. They maintain that the benefits of these diplomatic efforts will become more visible in the coming months.
