The Trump administration has revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to the United States, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, in a reciprocal move after Brazil denied visas to two American diplomats.
A US State Department spokesperson confirmed the decision, saying Washington acted in response to Brazil’s recent diplomatic measures. The spokesperson added that the ambassador would need to reapply for a visa if she left the United States.
Moreover, the spokesperson accused the Brazilian government of delaying approval for Washington’s ambassadorial nominee despite weeks of diplomatic engagement.
The United States stressed that the visa revocation does not amount to declaring the ambassador persona non grata. However, officials warned that additional diplomatic measures remain under consideration if Brazil continues delaying or refuses to grant agrément for the US nominee.
Furthermore, the spokesperson said President Donald Trump has the authority to choose America’s diplomatic representatives without foreign interference.
The dispute began after Brazil denied visas last month to US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Riley Barnes and Deputy Assistant Secretary Samuel Samson.
Brazilian authorities reportedly cited concerns that their visit could influence the country’s presidential election scheduled for October.
However, the United States rejected those allegations, saying the officials planned to meet government representatives and civil society groups to discuss election integrity, religious freedom and freedom of expression.
The diplomatic dispute comes as Brazil prepares for a closely watched presidential election later this year.
