Why did Russia Issue Arrest Warrant for Newly Appointed Ukrainian Military Commander Drapatyi?
Russian law enforcement authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, the newly appointed commander of Ukraineโs armed forces.
Russian state media reported the development late Tuesday, shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Drapatyi to the position.
According to RIA Novosti, Russiaโs Interior Ministry added Drapatyi to its wanted database without publicly specifying the latest charges against him.
However, Russiaโs Investigative Committee previously charged the Ukrainian commander in 2023 over alleged casualties in eastern Ukraine.
The committee accused Drapatyi of involvement in the deaths of 154 people during military operations under his command between 2017 and 2019.
Meanwhile, the arrest warrant emerged just hours after Zelensky dismissed General Oleksandr Syrskyi and named Drapatyi as his replacement.
The leadership change followed several days of street protests that erupted after authorities removed Mykhailo Fedorov from his position as defense minister.
Drapatyi has fought Russian forces for more than a decade and has held several senior military positions.
He first gained national recognition in 2014 during fighting in Donbas, where he ordered an armored vehicle through a blockade.
The maneuver helped rescue police officers trapped in Mariupol during intense fighting.
Later that year, Drapatyi successfully led an encircled Ukrainian unit out of territory controlled by Russian-backed forces.
Following Russiaโs full-scale invasion of Ukraine, military authorities repeatedly deployed Drapatyi to stabilize critical sections of the frontline.
In mid-2024, he played a key role in stopping a Russian offensive near Kharkiv and helping Ukrainian forces maintain their positions.
His performance subsequently earned him a senior leadership role within Ukraineโs military establishment.
Drapatyi later became the youngest commander of Ukraineโs land forces, one of the countryโs most important military positions.
His appointment as the armed forces commander now comes amid continued battlefield pressure and major political changes within Ukraineโs defense leadership.
The Russian warrant further escalates tensions surrounding Drapatyi as he assumes responsibility for leading Ukraineโs military during the ongoing conflict.
