Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has temporarily paused its second fundraising round, delaying investment agreements with prospective backers. The unexpected move has raised questions about the company’s immediate funding strategy, even though it has not ruled out resuming the process later.
According to people familiar with the matter, DeepSeek verbally informed several potential investors that investment agreements would not be signed in the coming days. However, the company may restart the fundraising process at a later stage if circumstances become more favourable.
The decision comes at a time when DeepSeek continues to attract global attention for its rapid growth and expanding influence in the artificial intelligence sector.
Investment Agreements Delayed for Now
DeepSeek has reportedly decided to suspend the current funding process instead of moving ahead with planned agreements. While the fundraising round has not been cancelled, it has been placed on hold until further notice.
As a result, investors who had been preparing to participate in the latest round will now have to wait for further communication from the company.
So far, DeepSeek has not issued an official public statement explaining the temporary pause. Therefore, the timeline for restarting the fundraising process remains uncertain.
Funding Round Targeted Massive Valuation
Before the pause, DeepSeek had planned to launch a fresh fundraising round at an estimated valuation of about 500 billion yuan (approximately $74 billion).
The company entered the new round after completing a successful first fundraising campaign, which reportedly secured around $7.4 billion from investors.
The planned valuation reflected growing confidence in DeepSeek’s position within the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry. Consequently, the funding round attracted considerable interest from prospective investors.
Reports Link Decision to Founderโs Concerns
According to reports, the temporary pause was partly influenced by concerns expressed by DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng.
The reports indicate that Liang was frustrated by online coverage discussing comments he allegedly made to investors during the company’s first fundraising round.
Although these reports have circulated widely, DeepSeek has not publicly confirmed the reason behind the decision. Therefore, the exact factors leading to the pause remain unclear.
IPO Discussions Continue in the Background
Despite delaying its fundraising plans, DeepSeek is reportedly continuing early discussions regarding a possible initial public offering.
The company has started preliminary deliberations about a potential listing on Shanghai’s Nasdaq-style STAR Market. However, those discussions remain in the early stages, and no official timeline has been announced.
For now, DeepSeek appears focused on reassessing its fundraising strategy while keeping future financing and expansion options available.
The temporary pause highlights the company’s cautious approach as it balances investor interest, market expectations and long-term growth plans in the highly competitive artificial intelligence sector.
