Who is Anita Anand?
Anita Indira Anand has served as Canada’s minister of foreign affairs since 2025. She is a Canadian politician, lawyer, and former academic. In addition, she represents Oakville East as a Member of Parliament after her election in 2019 as a member of the Liberal Party.
She was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, in 1967. Both of her parents were physicians of Indian origin. Her mother, Saroj D Ram, worked as an anaesthesiologist, while her father, SV (Andy) Anand, served as a general surgeon.
Her father belonged to Tamil Nadu, while her mother was from Punjab. Anita Anand has two sisters. Her elder sister, Gita Anand, is an employment lawyer in Toronto. Her younger sister, Sonia Anand, is a physician and researcher at McMaster University.
Her parents were followers of Mahatma Gandhi. Her father also met Gandhi when Anita Anand’s grandfather, VA Sundaram, was involved in the Indian independence movement. Later, her parents immigrated to Canada in the early 1960s and settled in Kentville.
The visit comes at a time when diplomatic engagement remains central to addressing regional challenges. Alongside discussions on the US-Iran situation, both countries are also expected to strengthen cooperation in trade, economic relations, and social development.
