Yemen’s Houthi movement has intensified attacks against Saudi Arabia amid ongoing peace efforts. The Iran-backed militant group seeks political concessions, greater influence over Yemen’s oil resources, and increased control over revenues.
Meanwhile, the Houthis cite Saudi restrictions on Yemeni ports and airports as a reason for retaliation.
Stalled Peace Efforts Drive Escalation
The political process following the 2022 truce has stalled. Consequently, the Houthis have increased pressure through missiles and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Recent attacks targeted Saudi energy infrastructure, Saudi oil tankers and an Aramco refinery in Jazan.
The group uses such attacks to pressure Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s recognised government over political demands.
Iran’s Regional Rivalry Adds Pressure
However, the Houthis’ actions also reflect wider developments involving Iran and its rivals.
The group remains aligned with Tehran and has used its campaign to support Iran during the regional confrontation. Houthis intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia immediately after Iran urged Houthis to block the Red Sea in retaliation for the US Naval blockade of Iranian ports.
By threatening Saudi energy infrastructure and maritime routes, the Houthis can increase pressure on global energy supplies.
Furthermore, the escalation follows Saudi Arabia’s efforts to strengthen security partnerships, including its defence agreement with Türkiye and Pakistan.
The Houthis may view these partnerships as a challenge.
At the same time, continued fighting has deepened Yemen’s humanitarian crisis and threatened international maritime security.
Therefore, renewed attacks could complicate diplomacy and increase risks for energy supplies and shipping.
