Indonesian authorities have arrested three suspects over allegations of illegally intercepting President Prabowo Subianto’s phone communications, triggering a major political and security controversy.
Police announced the arrests on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Investigators suspect that senior police officials were involved in unauthorized surveillance targeting prominent figures across Indonesia.
Was Indonesia’s Former Police Chief Involved?
National Police Criminal Investigation Chief Asep Safrudin identified the suspects by their initials: LSP, ASN and EH.
Justice Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra confirmed that one suspect was an active police general.
Indonesian media identified LSP as former national police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who was recently appointed presidential chief of staff.
However, police have not officially confirmed his identity.
Who Else Was Secretly Monitored?
Investigators believe the alleged surveillance extended beyond President Prabowo.
Other suspected targets included government officials, politicians, journalists, businesspeople and civil society representatives.
Police said the phone interceptions began in 2025 without proper legal authorization.
The suspects allegedly ordered surveillance without official investigation requests.
Investigators also suspect that electronic records were deleted in October 2026 to conceal the activities.
Police Seize Phones and Electronic Evidence
Authorities have questioned 10 witnesses and three expert witnesses. They also seized 11 mobile phones, an iPad and four flash drives.
A fourth individual remains under investigation. If convicted, the suspects could face prison sentences of up to 10 years. Justice Minister Mahendra said investigators had not established any suspected treason.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the purpose and extent of the alleged surveillance.
