Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global health advisory after identifying contaminated cough syrups in India that pose serious health risks. The agency has urged health authorities worldwide to report any detection of these medicines and remove them from circulation immediately.
Three Contaminated Cough Syrups Identified
According to the WHO, the affected products include specific batches of Coldrif from Sresan Pharmaceutical, Respifresh TR from Rednex Pharmaceuticals, and ReLife from Shape Pharma. These medicines have been found to contain toxic diethylene glycol, a substance that can cause severe, potentially fatal poisoning, particularly in children.
Fatal Cases Reported in Madhya Pradesh
Indiaโs Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) informed the WHO that the contaminated syrups were reportedly consumed by children under five in Chhindwara city, located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Tragically, several of these children died after consuming the tainted medicines.
Laboratory analysis revealed that the cough syrups contained diethylene glycol levels nearly 500 times the permissible limit, making them highly toxic.
Authorities Deny Export of Toxic Batches
The CDSCO clarified that none of the contaminated medicines were exported from India and that there is currently no evidence of illegal overseas distribution.
Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed on Friday that the toxic cough syrups had not been shipped to the United States, easing concerns about potential international spread.
WHO Urges Global Vigilance
The WHO emphasized the importance of strong surveillance systems and prompt reporting to prevent further fatalities linked to contaminated medicines. It also called on manufacturers to adhere strictly to international quality standards to ensure drug safety.
