The White House on Tuesday launched Trump TV, a live streaming platform offering updates, announcements and archived moments from US President Donald Trump’s administration.
The platform describes itself as a real-time source for major administration developments and selected footage from Trump’s presidency.
When the service went live, it showed archived footage of Trump delivering a speech at Mount Rushmore on July 3. The launch followed an extraordinary dispute between the Trump administration and major US television networks over White House media access.
US networks halt White House pool coverage
On Monday, major US broadcasters halted shared White House pool coverage in protest against Trump’s decision to bar three media outlets from the White House. CNN, MS NOW and Politico also took legal action after the administration ordered restrictions on their access. The dispute has intensified Trump’s longstanding conflict with sections of the US media. As a result, Trump’s opening of a new White House helipad and his visit to the United Nations General Assembly proceeded without live television coverage.
In a rare move, five major broadcasters stopped pool coverage in solidarity with CNN. The system allows one broadcaster to film White House events and distribute the footage to other television outlets. CNN had been scheduled to provide the White House pool coverage on Monday.
ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC said the public had an important interest in receiving accurate and independent information about the government. They also argued that administrations should not restrict news organisations because of disagreements with their reporting.
Meanwhile, the confrontation has created an unusual test between the Trump administration and major US media organisations. The dispute comes during a significant week for Washington, with Chinese President Xi Jinping visiting the White House.
