WhatsApp is introducing a feature designed to make sharing photos and videos quicker and more convenient. The update suggests recently saved media directly within chats, helping users avoid unnecessary steps.
Called Recent Media Suggestions, the feature gives users quick access to their latest photos and videos. Therefore, they no longer need to open their phone gallery or search manually before sharing media.
The feature is gradually reaching Android and iPhone users running the latest version of WhatsApp.
How Does WhatsApp’s Recent Media Suggestions Feature Work?
Once available, WhatsApp can display a preview of the latest photo or video when users open a conversation.
However, the feature appears in two different formats, and each account receives only one version.
In the first format, a small notification appears above the message bar. It displays a thumbnail of the latest gallery item and provides an option to share it.
Meanwhile, the second format temporarily replaces the camera icon beside the message bar. Instead, WhatsApp displays a thumbnail of the most recently saved photo or video.
Both versions aim to reduce the steps required to share media. Nevertheless, users can ignore the suggestions and continue chatting as usual.
The notification also includes a close button for anyone who prefers not to use the shortcut.
Will WhatsApp Send Suggested Photos Automatically?
No, selecting a suggested photo or video does not immediately send it to a contact.
Instead, WhatsApp opens its media editor, allowing users to review the selected file before sharing. They can also add captions, insert stickers or make other edits.
Furthermore, users can close the editor without sending anything. This gives them control over what they share and helps prevent accidental messages.
The feature works with different types of recently saved media. These include camera photos, screenshots, downloaded images and videos saved from other applications.
WhatsApp does not appear to distinguish between media sources or file types. Instead, it simply suggests the most recently saved gallery item.
How to Disable Recent Media Suggestions on WhatsApp
WhatsApp activates Recent Media Suggestions automatically once the feature reaches an account. However, users can switch it off through the app’s settings.
Follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp Settings.
- Select Chats.
- Tap Recent media suggestions.
- Turn off the option.
After disabling the feature, users will no longer see these photo and video suggestions.
When Will the Update Reach More Users?
WhatsApp is gradually rolling out Recent Media Suggestions to Android and iOS users. Therefore, availability may vary between accounts and devices.
Users running the latest WhatsApp version may receive the feature as the rollout progresses. However, the company has not announced a confirmed completion date.
