Director Jon M. Chu has revealed that casting for the highly anticipated Britney Spears biopic has not officially started yet.
The Wicked and Crazy Rich Asians filmmaker shared the update while attending the opening night of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
Chu said he receives hundreds of messages from people interested in auditioning for the project. “I get emails every day, hundreds of emails from people all around the world. Thank you for sending all your auditions,” he said.
However, the director explained that casting is not his priority at the moment. “I am not even thinking about casting right now. We’re just trying to get the story right.”
Liz Meriweather Develops Britney Spears Story
Chu also praised screenwriter Liz Meriweather, who is currently working on the biopic’s screenplay.
“She’s doing many beautiful things and I may or may have not gotten glimpses of what she’s been doing and it’s incredible,” Chu told Variety.
He described the material as “incredible, profound, beautiful” but stopped short of revealing further details.
“You already got me to say too much,” the director added.
Meriweather recently confirmed that the screenplay remains in its early stages. She is also approaching the project differently from the television productions she has previously worked on.
Britney Spears Closely Involved in Biopic
The upcoming film is expected to explore major periods of Spears’ life and career.
Spears herself is set to remain closely involved in the project, adding further significance to the development process.
For now, Chu and Meriweather appear focused on shaping the story before moving toward casting.
