Saudi authorities issued fresh security alerts in Riyadh and Al-Kharj on Saturday. The warnings came amid renewed Houthi attacks targeting the Gulf kingdom.
Saudi civil defence later announced an all-clear after raising alerts for the second time over potential danger. The warnings covered Riyadh and Al-Kharj, located east of the capital.
The alerts marked the first such warnings in Riyadh since the Houthis intensified attacks against Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, two loud booms were heard in Riyadh’s Olaya area.
Houthis threaten response after alleged incidents in Sanaa
The latest alerts followed a statement from the Houthis’ military spokesperson. The spokesperson said the group had foiled unspecified “criminal attempts” in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
The Houthis blamed Saudi Arabia for the alleged attempts and vowed to respond. However, Saudi Arabia’s government media office had not immediately commented on the statement.
The developments have added to tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned group. The Houthis control Yemen’s most populous areas and large parts of the country’s north.
Houthi attacks target Saudi interests
The Houthis have launched attacks towards Saudi Arabia since declaring a naval blockade against Riyadh in July. Their strikes have targeted Saudi vessels operating in the Red Sea.
The group has also claimed that Saudi Arabia’s air force conducted hundreds of airstrikes in recent days. The claims come as the Houthis continue their military escalation in Yemen.
The Iran-aligned group also seized Yemen’s entire Red Sea coast during a rapid advance this month. The development has further heightened security concerns across the region.
UN Security Council condemns attacks
The United Nations Security Council addressed the escalating situation in a statement issued on Friday. It condemned the continued Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia.
The Security Council specifically highlighted attacks affecting civilian and energy infrastructure. It said those attacks had injured civilians, including women and children.
The statement also condemned the “Houthi military escalation in Yemen”. The council’s remarks came as attacks and counterstrikes continued to fuel regional tensions.
For now, the latest alerts in Riyadh and Al-Kharj have ended with an all-clear from Saudi civil defence. However, the renewed warnings underscore the continuing security concerns linked to Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
