Former Chief of Army Staff Qamar Javed Bajwa is stable and fully conscious after fainting due to a heart block, according to a family source.
The source clarified that he did not slip. Instead, he lost consciousness because of a serious disturbance in the heartโs electrical system. As a result, he fell and suffered head injuries.
What Caused the Fall?
According to the family source, Gen (retd) Bajwa felt unwell on the evening of February 9. However, he still went for his routine evening walk and exercise. Later that night, he experienced nausea and went to the washroom.
After vomiting, he fainted and collapsed. Consequently, he sustained injuries, and blood was seen coming from his ears. He was rushed to Combined Military Hospital within 15 minutes.
Doctors later determined that he suffered a Third-Degree Atrioventricular (AV) Block. This condition disrupts electrical signals between the heartโs chambers. Therefore, it can cause sudden fainting episodes.
Medical Condition and Treatment
Medical examinations revealed three hairline fractures in his skull. Fortunately, doctors found no blood clots in the brain. That outcome significantly reduced the risk of fatal complications.
There is some internal bleeding. However, doctors have decided that surgery is not required at this stage. Instead, they have placed him under sedation to support healing and recovery.
Currently, doctors are treating him with a temporary pacemaker. Meanwhile, they plan to install a permanent pacemaker to correct the heart condition. According to the source, he is now fully conscious and recognizes his family members.
Appeal to Avoid Rumors
The family source expressed concern over misinformation circulating on social media. Therefore, they urged the public to avoid spreading unverified reports. Respect for medical privacy was also emphasized.
Earlier, Inter-Services Public Relations confirmed that the former army chief is receiving medical care. The statement noted that he was admitted after sustaining injuries from a fall at his residence.
A Distinguished Military Career
Gen (retd) Bajwa served as Pakistanโs army chief from 2016 to 2022. He retired on November 29, 2022, after completing his tenure.
Although his sudden health scare raised concern, the latest update offers reassurance. Doctors continue monitoring his condition closely. Meanwhile, family members remain by his side as he recovers.
