Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and security during a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The meeting took place at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Wednesday during the UN chief’s two-day official visit to Pakistan.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations, both sides discussed matters of mutual interest and the regional security environment.
They also reviewed the United Nations’ role in promoting global peace and security.
The discussions covered several major regional issues. These included the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and terrorism originating from Afghanistan.
Field Marshal Munir highlighted Pakistan’s continued contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.
He also praised the United Nations for supporting peace, stability and humanitarian cooperation across the world.
Guterres acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistan and its armed forces in the fight against terrorism.
He also appreciated Pakistan’s role in UN peacekeeping missions and its efforts to support the peaceful resolution of regional conflicts.
During his visit, the UN chief also met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Guterres praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue, mediation and de-escalation. He also highlighted Islamabad’s role in facilitating talks between the United States and Iran.
President Asif Ali Zardari also awarded Guterres the Nishan-i-Imtiaz for his international service and contribution to global peace and development.
The meetings reflected Pakistan’s continued diplomatic engagement with the United Nations on regional security, peacekeeping and conflict resolution.
