John Kirby, the spokesperson for the United States National Security Council, acknowledged in a press briefing that weapons were left in Afghanistan as part of the US policy after the departure.
He stated that the U.S. left weapons with approval from Congress to strengthen the Afghan Army.
Kirby further admitted that the weapons left for the Afghan army were confiscated by the Taliban government after the fall of Kabul.
He clarified that these weapons belonged to the Afghan National Security Forces, and as the Taliban made advances, many Afghan forces chose not to fight and left their arms behind.
Regarding the situation in Pakistan, Kirby mentioned that Pakistan “continues to face a viable terrorism threat” across the border.
Earlier, the United States had called for free and fair elections in Pakistan, emphasizing its commitment to engaging with the leaders chosen by the Pakistani people.
State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller stated that the U.S. supports free and fair elections in Pakistan and engages with the country on a bilateral basis to discuss this support.
He clarified that the U.S. does not take a position on political parties in Pakistan and will engage with the leaders elected by the Pakistani people.
