Footage shows Anmol and Amna arguing with Township residents shortly before police took them into custody
LAHORE: Lahore Police have launched an investigation into the deaths of two women in custody in the Township area as mobile phone footage recorded shortly before their detention emerged.
Police identified the women as Anmol and Amna and said officers handed them over to the investigation wing after registering a case against them.
The footage reportedly shows both women arguing with residents in B Block, Township. According to police, residents were demanding the return of money they alleged the women had taken during a robbery.
The video also shows Anmol and Amna attempting to leave the area before police arrived and took them into custody. Authorities have now incorporated the footage into the official investigation.
Police Examine Circumstances Surrounding Deaths
Meanwhile, Lahore Police said investigators were examining the deaths under relevant provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Officials said they were collecting available evidence to establish the sequence of events before and during the women’s detention.
Police added that authorities would disclose the evidence after completing the inquiry.
The deaths have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the women’s time in police custody and the events leading to their deteriorating condition.
Postmortems Await Identification Formalities
Earlier, DIG Investigation Zeeshan Raza said authorities faced delays in formally identifying the deceased because neither woman had an identity card with her.
Furthermore, relatives who initially contacted police could not provide their identity documents, delaying the required postmortem examinations.
However, other family members later approached authorities, allowing officials to begin completing the necessary identification formalities.
Raza said doctors would conduct the postmortems after authorities entered the women’s national identity card details into the official record.
The autopsy findings are expected to play a crucial role in determining the exact causes of death and helping investigators establish whether any wrongdoing occurred while the women remained in police custody.
