A speeding vehicle crashed into a mourning tent outside an imambargah in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority, injuring 14 people. The incident occurred during a majlis near Masjid-o-Imam Bargah Baqiyatullah on Saba Avenue in Phase VI. Consequently, panic spread among mourners as rescue teams rushed to the scene.
Police quickly secured the area and launched an investigation. Officers also detained the driver and two passengers immediately after the collision.
Police Detain Driver After Crash During Majlis
According to police, an out-of-control Suzuki pick-up struck the tent where mourners had gathered. The driver claimed brake failure caused the accident during initial questioning. However, investigators continue examining all possible causes behind the incident.
Authorities have not ruled out mechanical failure or other contributing factors. Meanwhile, officials collected evidence and recorded witness statements from the scene.
Rescue Teams Shift Injured as Investigation Continues
Rescue officials shifted all injured people to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment. The injured included women and a five-year-old child among other mourners. Videos circulating online showed injured people lying on the road awaiting medical assistance.
Furthermore, one unidentified person warned about a possible bomb inside the vehicle. As a result, frightened mourners rushed away from the area. Police later secured the vehicle and continued their inspection. However, authorities did not immediately confirm the bomb claim.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. He directed Karachi police to determine the exact cause of the crash. Moreover, he instructed officials to provide the best possible medical care for every injured person.
Police said they would complete the investigation before announcing their final findings. Authorities also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information regarding the incident.
