Cornell University in the United States has suspended fraternity parties and social gatherings for the remainder of the 2026-27 academic year following public outrage over allegations of sexual assault involving a former student.
University President Michael Kotlikoff announced the decision on October 13, saying the restrictions would allow officials to review fraternity culture and strengthen campus safety. The move follows a lawsuit filed by a former undergraduate who alleges that seven men sexually assaulted her during a fraternity party in October 2024.
The allegations have triggered protests and criticism of the university’s handling of the case.
University Introduces Strict New Measures
Under the new policy, fraternities belonging to the university’s Interfraternity Council cannot host parties or social events at their houses until the academic year ends. Any chapter violating the restrictions will face immediate emergency suspension.
Kotlikoff acknowledged concerns about student safety and said the university needed to take meaningful steps to address shortcomings. The administration has also promised additional support for people reporting sexual misconduct.
The university previously closed the Chi Phi fraternity chapter connected to the allegations. However, the complainant’s lawsuit has renewed scrutiny of the institution’s response and disciplinary decisions.
Independent Investigation Planned
Cornell has announced further measures to improve accountability. New York State Police will assist with investigations into reported sexual offences on campus, while former US Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates has been appointed to conduct an independent review of the university’s handling of the case.
The allegations have not resulted in criminal charges against the accused men to date. The case remains a subject of significant public attention, with students and faculty questioning whether the university’s existing safeguards adequately protect its community.
The latest restrictions mark a major change in Cornell’s approach to fraternity activities as administrators face pressure to rebuild trust and improve campus safety.
