The United States has withdrawn all B-1B strategic bombers deployed at RAF Fairford in Britain following a suspected terrorist plot targeting the military base, according to a Pentagon official.
Around 12 B-1 bombers had been stationed at the Gloucestershire airfield, northwest of London. The aircraft had also served as a key staging point for US military operations against Iranian targets during the recent Iran war.
The Pentagon confirmed that all bombers previously deployed to Fairford have returned to their home bases in the United States. Officials said operational security prevented Washington from announcing the movement earlier.
The withdrawal came about a week after British authorities arrested several men suspected of planning terrorist activity near the airfield. Police said five men arrived at Fairford in three vans, which contained quantities of fuel but no explosives.
Authorities later arrested a sixth man, a British-Iranian dual national, over suspected involvement in planning a terrorist act. He was subsequently released on bail.
British authorities have said there are strong indications that Iran may have been involved in the suspected plot. However, Tehran rejected the allegations as baseless and summoned Britain’s ambassador for an explanation.
US President Donald Trump said the suspects had intended to cause significant damage, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested a foreign actor was behind the alleged plan.
