The Trump administration will allow senior Iranian officials to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, the US State Department said.
The decision comes as Washington and Tehran remain at war while continuing intermittent talks aimed at ending the seven-month conflict.
A State Department spokesperson said a “core delegation from the Iranian regime” would receive permission under US obligations as the UN host country.
As a result, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to receive visas, according to a source familiar with the decision.
Iranian Delegation Faces Restrictions
The United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, triggering Iranian strikes against Israel and Gulf states hosting US military bases.
The State Department said the Iranian delegation would face travel restrictions and limits on purchasing luxury and other goods.
Officials also said this year’s delegation would be smaller than last year’s group.
Previously, Washington restricted Iranian officials’ movements between the UN headquarters, Iran’s UN mission, ambassador’s residence and John F Kennedy Airport.
Iran’s foreign ministry had not immediately commented on the decision.
US Extends Visa Ban on Palestinians
The 1947 UN headquarters agreement generally requires the United States to provide access to foreign diplomats attending UN activities.
However, Washington says it can deny visas on security, terrorism or foreign policy grounds.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration will deny entry to Palestinian officials for this year’s General Assembly.
The administration cited their efforts to internationalise the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including legal proceedings against Israel at international tribunals.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was also denied a visa, according to a Palestinian official.
