A 21-year-old university student survived a dramatic fall from an eighth-floor apartment window in Athens, Georgia, after landing on a second-floor terrace near a swimming pool.
Christine Sargent, a student at the University of Georgia, fell from the apartment building on September 26. According to witnesses, she had been dancing on a couch near an open window when she slipped and fell outside.
Metal Bench May Have Broken Fall
Police investigators found evidence that Sargent hit a metal bench near the swimming pool. The impact damaged the bench and left bloodstains on its cushion. Investigators believe the bench may have helped reduce the force of the fall before Sargent landed on the second-floor terrace.
Her friends found her lying motionless and immediately contacted emergency services. Medical responders took her to a hospital, where she received treatment.
Police Classify Incident as Accident
Police later classified the fall as an accident and said they did not consider it a criminal matter. Authorities also confirmed that Sargent lived in the apartment building. Her relatives said she was recovering quickly after the incident. However, the report did not provide specific details about the injuries she suffered.
Sargent’s sister also expressed gratitude that she survived the fall.
Student Lands on Second-Floor Terrace
The unusual location of the landing played a significant role in the incident. Although Sargent fell from an eighth-floor window, she did not reach ground level.
Instead, she landed near the swimming pool on a terrace located on the building’s second floor. Investigators believe the metal bench may have absorbed part of the impact.
The incident remains classified as accidental, while Sargent continues her recovery following the fall.
