A US attack on Larak Island in southern Iran killed and injured several Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) members and civilians, according to Iranian authorities.
The IRGC accused the United States of carrying out an “aggressive” attack on Sunday in Hormozgan province.
In a statement, the Guards said the strike targeted Larak Island and caused casualties among its fighters and local residents.
The IRGC also vowed to respond, describing the attack as a strategic mistake that would carry economic and military consequences for Washington.
IRGC spokesperson Sardar Mohebi accused the United States of attempting to justify its actions amid growing regional tensions.
He said Washington would face consequences for what Tehran described as another act of aggression.
Earlier, Iranian news agency Fars reported that residents heard an explosion near Larak Island. However, officials initially provided no details about its location or cause.
US media later reported that American forces had struck the island after observing preparations to launch rockets and place mines near the Strait of Hormuz.
US Warns Against Mining Strait of Hormuz
The reported attack came after US Central Command completed an operation to clear sea mines from international shipping routes through the strategic waterway.
The Trump administration has repeatedly warned Iran against placing additional mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump said Iran had been notified that any vessel placing new mines would face immediate destruction.
Washington said its forces were closely monitoring the area and remained prepared to protect commercial shipping through the waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains crucial for global energy supplies, making any military escalation around the passage a major international concern.
Iran Rejects US Economic Claims
Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf rejected US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s claims about Washington’s economic pressure on Tehran.
Bessent had claimed that US measures had brought 130 million barrels of Iranian oil onto the market during the previous 14 days.
Ghalibaf dismissed the claim in a post on X, accusing the US official of spreading false information.
The fresh US attack and Iranian retaliation have further escalated tension in the region.
