The United States will host the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup from January 5 to 30, 2028. The tournament will bring together 19 women’s football clubs from six continental confederations, marking a significant step in the global development of women’s club football.
FIFA announced the decision on October 22, citing America’s experience in hosting major sporting events, its modern facilities, and growing interest in women’s football. However, the governing body has not yet announced the host cities or stadiums for the competition.
Seven Clubs Already Secure Qualification
Seven teams have already secured places in the historic tournament, including Arsenal Women, FC Barcelona Femení, Club América Femenil, and Gotham FC. Brazil’s Corinthians, North Korea’s Naegohyang Women’s FC, and China’s Wuhan Jiangda WFC have also qualified.
The remaining 12 places will be determined through qualification arrangements covering clubs from different regions. Europe will receive six places, while Asia, Africa, North America, Central America and the Caribbean, and South America will each have three representatives. Oceania will contribute one club.
The competition will take place every four years, giving leading women’s teams an opportunity to compete on an international stage. Moreover, the tournament aims to expand audiences, increase global visibility, and strengthen the professional women’s club game.
US Builds on Major Football Hosting Experience
The United States hosted the men’s Club World Cup in 2025 and co-hosted the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada and Mexico. These events helped demonstrate the country’s capacity to organize major international football competitions.
FIFA’s chief women’s football officer, Sarai Bareman, said the country’s sporting infrastructure and interest in women’s football made it a suitable host. The tournament will also provide an opportunity to promote women’s clubs to new audiences worldwide.
The inaugural competition is expected to become an important milestone for women’s football, although its eventual impact will depend on participation, audience engagement, and continued investment in the sport.
