The United States and Iran held separate discussions with mediators on Monday as both sides renewed efforts to find a way out of their seven-month conflict.
According to officials, further talks could focus on an amended version of a seven-day proposal presented by Iran during the United Nations General Assembly last week. The latest diplomatic push follows two previous ceasefire agreements reached through mediation in April and June. However, both arrangements later collapsed.
Iran Awaits US Response
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who remained in New York after the UN General Assembly, said Tehran was waiting for Washington’s response.
He said Iran had presented what it considers a path toward a peaceful settlement.
“If the Americans claim they are seeking an agreement or a peaceful solution, we have presented that solution,” Araghchi said.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump confirmed that American officials had spoken separately with mediators on Monday. He did not provide further details about the discussions.
What Iran’s Seven-Day Proposal Includes
Iran’s proposal calls for an end to hostilities in Iran and Lebanon. It also seeks the unfreezing of Iranian assets, an end to sanctions on Iranian oil and the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports.
In return, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil shipments.
The proposal also calls for renewed negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme and the issue of its highly enriched uranium.
Trump Signals Further Negotiations
Trump said on Saturday that he had rejected Iran’s proposal. However, he later indicated that US negotiators could hold further discussions this week.
Araghchi said mediators had not formally conveyed a US rejection. Therefore, Tehran is awaiting Washington’s definitive position before deciding its next steps. He also stressed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would depend on Iran’s conditions being met.
For now, indirect diplomacy continues as both sides consider whether a revised proposal could create a path toward another ceasefire.
