The United States launched fresh air strikes on Iran on Wednesday, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM). According to the CENTCOM, the operation began at 8:00 p.m. EDT, corresponding to 0000 GMT.
According to the US military, the strikes targeted locations inside Iran in response to recent Iranian attacks on US bases in Jordan.
Meanwhile, explosions were reported in several areas of southern Iran following the attacks.
Al Jazeera reported that multiple explosions were heard after the strikes began.
CENTCOM described the operation as a direct response to Iran’s attempted missile attack on US forces in the Middle East one day earlier.
“The strikes are a powerful response to yesterday’s attempted Iranian attacks on US forces based in the Middle East,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
The latest operation marks another escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The strikes followed an earlier Iranian missile attack that US officials said was successfully intercepted without causing reported casualties.
Neither US officials nor Iranian authorities immediately released details about casualties or damage resulting from the latest strikes.
The developments come amid heightened regional tensions and growing concerns over the risk of further military escalation.
