The next round of technical-level talks between the United States and Iran will be held soon after the funeral ceremony of Ali Ayatollah Khamenei, who was assassinated along with other Iranian leaders in the joint US-Israeli attacks on Feb 28 in Tehran. Khamenei’s funeral procession will start on July 6, and the burial ceremony will be held in Mashhad on July 9.
According to Iranian leaders, the United States and Iran agreed to continue negotiations, with the next round of talks to be scheduled as soon as possible after the funeral processions of Iran’s former Supreme Leader.
Meanwhile, Qatar announced that indirect talks between United States and Iranian delegations in Doha ended with “positive progress” on issues related to the recent Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said on X that Qatari and Pakistani mediators held separate meetings with US and Iranian negotiators.
“Qatar and Pakistan mediators concluded separate meetings with the US and Iranian negotiators in Doha today, with positive progress made on issues related to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, building on the outcomes of the Lake Lucerne Summit,” Al Ansari wrote.
Technical discussions continue
According to a senior US administration official, US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held constructive discussions in Doha, with progress being made in technical negotiations aimed at transforming the interim peace agreement into a permanent settlement.
The officials participated in the latest round of indirect talks between Washington and Tehran on Tuesday.
The negotiations follow an agreement reached last month that launched a 60-day negotiation period. However, the process initially encountered challenges due to renewed tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and disagreements regarding the future administration of the strategically important waterway.
If sustained, the latest progress could help advance efforts toward a broader and more durable agreement between the two countries.
