Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the United States and Iran to return to dialogue and revive negotiations aimed at ending their ongoing conflict. Xi made the appeal during a closed-door meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday.
According to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, Xi said Beijing supports the two sides returning to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and resolving their differences through negotiations.
Xi Calls for Renewed US-Iran Dialogue
Xi said China has consistently supported respect for the sovereignty and security of all countries.
He also said Beijing has played a constructive role in reducing tensions and encouraging negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Xi expressed hope that the US and Iran would return to negotiations as soon as possible.
He also called for a comprehensive agreement covering the nuclear issue and other outstanding matters.
The Chinese president said such negotiations could help create conditions for an early end to the conflict.
Islamabad MoU Returns to Focus
The reference to the Islamabad MoU highlights Pakistan’s role in efforts to mediate between Washington and Tehran.
Pakistan helped facilitate earlier discussions between US and Iranian officials in Islamabad. The agreement later provided a framework for further negotiations between the two sides.
Pakistan has continued to call for dialogue and implementation of the Islamabad MoU.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Sharif stressed the importance of implementing the Islamabad MoU and reaffirmed Pakistan’s willingness to support regional peace and stability.
Xi Also Raises Taiwan Issue
During his meeting with Trump, Xi also addressed the sensitive issue of Taiwan.
He urged Washington to oppose what Beijing describes as “Taiwan independence” and handle the Taiwan question carefully.
Xi said China’s position on protecting its national unity and territorial integrity was “crystal clear.”
Beijing considers Taiwan part of China, while Taiwan has maintained its own self-governing political system since 1949.
Xi also called for stronger China-US relations based on strategic stability.
He said such a relationship could not be built overnight and required both countries to translate their stated vision into practical cooperation.
Trump Calls Meeting ‘Great’
Trump described his meeting with Xi as “great” after the talks.
The two leaders discussed several issues during Xi’s state visit, including trade, technology, Taiwan and the conflict involving Iran.
Xi arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, his first trip to the United States in more than a decade.
The visit is also part of efforts by Washington and Beijing to maintain direct engagement despite disagreements over trade, technology and geopolitical issues.
Xi’s latest appeal puts the Islamabad MoU back in the spotlight as Pakistan continues to push for diplomacy and a negotiated settlement to the US-Iran conflict.
