The US military intercepted an Iranian “surprise attack” targeting American forces in the Middle East, US Central Command said.
According to CENTCOM, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran at 5:45 p.m. ET.
However, US forces successfully intercepted all the missiles, while American military personnel remained on high alert.
A US official told CNN that initial estimates indicated Iran launched no more than four ballistic missiles.
The attack came roughly one day after President Donald Trump said the United States had halted strikes against Iran.
Trump also claimed that Iran wanted to negotiate with Washington, although Iranian officials rejected that suggestion.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said there were no ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States.
Meanwhile, Trump said “good talks” were underway with Tehran after he abruptly ended a two-week US bombing campaign.
However, Iran has denied seeking to resume negotiations with Washington.
Trump also warned that the United States could restart military strikes if diplomatic efforts failed to produce an agreement.
The latest missile attack has increased uncertainty over the future of US-Iran relations and the prospects for renewed regional escalation.
Nevertheless, CENTCOM said American forces remained vigilant and maintained a high state of readiness following the attempted attack.
The development also comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran after recent US military operations against Iranian targets.
Both sides now face growing pressure to clarify their positions on negotiations and prevent further military escalation across the Middle East.
