US President Donald Trump is allowing diplomatic negotiations with Iran to continue while keeping American military options available, according to US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.
Speaking on a Private Channel News Sunday, Waltz said the United States remains prepared for further military action if necessary. However, he added that Trump is currently giving negotiations with Iran an opportunity to progress.
“Trump is giving talks some space — he’s giving it a little bit of room,” Waltz said.
US Denies Reports of Munitions Shortages
Before Friday, the US military had announced strikes on Iran for 13 consecutive nights. The attacks marked the most significant escalation since the April ceasefire. However, no new strikes have been announced during the past two days.
Waltz also rejected reports suggesting that the United States was rationing weapons because of supply shortages.
“I want to be crystal clear. The US military — and I’ve verified this every which way — has everything that it needs to conduct this campaign as effectively as it needs to be,” he said.
He blamed previous stockpile depletion on the administration of former president Joe Biden and dismissed the shortage reports as false.
Iran Suspends Retaliatory Operations
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities announced that Tehran had suspended its retaliatory operations against the United States. However, they warned that renewed American strikes could trigger a wider regional conflict.
According to Iranian officials, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired warning shots in the Strait of Hormuz to stop six vessels that allegedly deviated from Iranian shipping routes.
The Guards said the action aimed to enforce maritime regulations and warned that the conflict could escalate if Washington resumed military operations.
Oman Talks Focus on Strait of Hormuz
Iran also reported progress in negotiations with Oman regarding management of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas trade.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Iranian and Omani deputy foreign ministers held several rounds of discussions in Tehran. The talks focused on “common principles and operational mechanisms” for ensuring safe shipping passage while respecting both countries’ sovereign rights.
Baqaei described the negotiations as “useful” and confirmed that technical and political consultations are continuing.
Houthis Claim Drone Attack
Separately, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement claimed it had shot down a Saudi reconnaissance drone over northwestern Yemen.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the group “successfully shot down a Turkish-made… armed reconnaissance drone belonging to the Saudi enemy while it was conducting hostile operations”.
Trump Signals Diplomacy but Keeps Military Option Open
Reports citing regional sources suggest that Oman is attempting to broker a new arrangement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. According to those reports, Trump declined to approve a planned 14th consecutive night of strikes in order to allow diplomatic efforts to continue.
Speaking at the White House, Trump emphasized that the United States remains ready for military action if negotiations fail.
“We’re talking to the Iranians right now. I think they’re getting more and more serious as the days go by. We’re locked and loaded and ready to go, but we’re talking to them,” Trump said.
He later added that he did not believe Iran was fully prepared to reach an agreement, although he remained open to hearing its proposals.
The current pause in military operations appears intended to provide room for diplomacy while maintaining pressure on Tehran as negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz continue.
