The United States has deployed two additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar to protect key energy facilities amid preparations for possible renewed military operations against Iran, Axios reported today.
According to the report, one Patriot battery arrived in Saudi Arabia to protect a major oil facility, while another was deployed to Qatar to safeguard a natural gas facility.
The deployments aim to reassure both countries that Washington would defend critical energy infrastructure if President Donald Trump resumes major military operations against Iran.
Trump said Thursday that he was considering restarting a bombing campaign in the coming weeks. He also warned that Iran could face severe consequences if Tehran fails to reach a deal with Washington.
Axios reported that Saudi and Qatari leaders had urged Trump in early August to avoid a major attack that could target Iranian energy infrastructure. They reportedly feared retaliatory strikes against their own oil and gas facilities.
US officials said the concerns contributed to Trump’s decision to pursue economic pressure instead.
Washington would reportedly require Saudi approval to use its airspace for any renewed large-scale military operations. Riyadh is unlikely to grant such access without assurances regarding the protection of its energy infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the US is reinforcing its military presence in the Middle East. The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group has departed San Diego and is expected to reach the region around mid-November.
The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, carrying thousands of Marines, also departed Monday and is expected to arrive by the end of November.
