The United States Iran war suffered another blow as the US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned today. He sent his resignation to President Donald Trump.
US Army Secretary was opposing renewed war with Iran.
Driscoll, the Army’s top civilian official, is expected to leave the Pentagon within days if Trump accepts his resignation.
According to US media reports, Driscoll and Hegseth clashed over the Army’s direction and the removal of several senior officers.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Driscoll also maintained a close relationship with the former Army Chief of Staff, General Randy George.
White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly did not deny reports about Driscoll’s resignation.
Instead, she praised his leadership and said he had effectively advanced Trump’s agenda at the Army.
Pentagon Faces Leadership Changes
Kelly highlighted Driscoll’s role in military operations, readiness efforts and negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine.
She also credited him with strengthening the Army while working with Trump and Hegseth.
However, Democratic Senator Jack Reed blamed Hegseth for Driscoll’s departure and criticised his leadership at the Defence Department.
Reed said Driscoll’s resignation reflected the continuing damage Hegseth was causing within the Pentagon.
Driscoll previously served in Iraq and later advised Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign after an unsuccessful 2020 congressional bid.
Army Leadership Under Pressure
Driscoll also attended law school with Vice President JD Vance, and their relationship reportedly helped him gain influence within the administration.
Nevertheless, his reported dispute with Hegseth created growing tensions at the Pentagon.
The resignation comes as the US war with Iran enters its seventh month, increasing pressure on American military leadership.
Hegseth dismissed General Randy George as Army chief in April and has not yet selected a permanent replacement.
Consequently, Driscoll’s departure could leave the Army without permanent civilian or uniformed leadership at a critical time.
