US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Monday as a brief pro-Khalistan demonstration took place outside the shrine.
Gor arrived with a 28-member American delegation that included US senators, government officials and foreign policy scholars. He was welcomed inside the shrine by Sikh religious leaders, including Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Harjinder Singh Dhami and acting Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj.
Protest Outside Golden Temple
Outside the main entrance, Emaan Singh Mann, acting president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), and supporters staged a brief demonstration.
The group raised pro-Khalistan slogans before security personnel intervened and moved the protesters away from the entrance. Security was strengthened around the shrine during the ambassador’s visit.
The demonstration remained separate from Gor’s meetings inside the Golden Temple.
Gor Meets Sikh Leaders
Inside the shrine, Gor held discussions with Sikh leaders on matters concerning the Sikh community.
The meeting focused on community-related issues and engagement with Sikh representatives in the United States.
Gor also visited the Partition Museum and Jallianwala Bagh during his Amritsar programme.
He later described the visit as memorable and said he was pleased to return to the Golden Temple. It was his second visit to the shrine, around 15 years after his previous visit.
The Amritsar visit comes as Washington and New Delhi continue engagement on security, trade and other bilateral issues. Gor has also travelled to other parts of India since taking office as US ambassador, including Srinagar and Leh.
