US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned on Tuesday after the Trump administration asked her to leave her diplomatic post amid allegations of misconduct and possible ethical violations.
White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed that the administration had requested Guilfoyle’s resignation, describing her as a valuable member of the team and wishing her well. The announcement followed several reports questioning her conduct before and during her tenure in Athens.
According to reports published by The Wall Street Journal, Guilfoyle allegedly asked a political donor to pay a $100,000 credit card bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing in exchange for access to senior administration officials. The donor reportedly did not make the payment.
Other allegations suggested that she promoted the interests of a Greek construction and energy company and allowed its lobbyist to attend private diplomatic meetings. Reports also raised questions about gifts, luxury travel and her interactions with Greek officials.
Guilfoyle strongly denied the allegations, saying they were false and that she intended to defend her reputation and integrity. Her lawyers maintained that the money she sought related to unpaid speaking engagements and public appearances. They also rejected claims of wrongdoing involving travel and gifts.
US President Donald Trump had indicated a day earlier that his administration was reviewing the situation and was unhappy with the reports.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio initially defended Guilfoyle but later declined to comment on the allegations.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that the State Department’s inspector general was reviewing the matter, although it remained unclear whether a formal investigation had begun.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and California prosecutor, was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son.
Her departure has drawn attention to questions about ethics, diplomatic responsibilities and accountability within the Trump administration.
