The United Nations Security Council demanded action against the culprits involved in the tragic Kohat blast. The blast occurred outside the Police Lines mosque in Kohat, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The council called for those responsible for the attack, including its organisers, financiers and sponsors, to be held accountable.
At least 23 people, including 17 policemen and six civilians, were killed in the September 18 assault targeting a police compound.
According to police, terrorists first detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near a mosque during Friday prayers. They then stormed the compound and attacked police facilities.
Police and security forces killed eight terrorists during retaliatory operations following the attack.
The UNSC statement, issued by Council President Jérôme Bonnafont of France, strongly condemned the suicide bombing at the mosque.
Meanwhile, member states expressed sympathy to the victims’ families and the Pakistani government. They also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The council stressed that terrorism in all forms remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
It also urged all countries to cooperate with Pakistan to bring the perpetrators and their backers to justice.
The attack was claimed by the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led Ittehadul Mujahideen.
Afterward, KP police said Elite Force commandos, Counterterrorism Department teams and security forces had completed a clearance operation at the site.
Broader security response
The armed forces later conducted airstrikes on terrorist positions in the border region with Afghanistan, killing more than 28 terrorists, according to the information ministry.
Meanwhile, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Peshawar Corps headquarters.
He said the armed forces remained determined to defeat terrorism and ensure lasting peace and stability.
The Kohat attack also recalled a 2010 bombing in a police colony, where 20 people were killed and more than 90 injured.
