United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced plans to visit Pakistan soon, highlighting Islamabad’s role in US-Iran mediation. He made the remarks during his final press conference before the 81st UN General Assembly high-level week.
Guterres said the Pakistani government invited him to visit, with the trip expected next month. He also stressed that dialogue remains essential for resolving the conflict and preventing further escalation.
Guterres Calls For Renewed US-Iran Dialogue
The UN chief said negotiations between the United States and Iran should resume through diplomacy. He noted that previous progress, including a memorandum of understanding, had come under renewed pressure.
According to Guterres, the conflict now involves wider regional concerns beyond Washington and Tehran. He pointed to attacks affecting Gulf countries and warned about their consequences for regional and global economies.
Guterres Names Pakistan Among Key Mediators
Guterres identified Pakistan and Türkiye as important mediators alongside Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He specifically highlighted Pakistan while announcing his upcoming visit during the press conference.
Pakistan has hosted and supported diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran. The UN previously welcomed Islamabad’s mediation efforts, along with contributions from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Türkiye.
The secretary-general said the complex situation requires serious dialogue between the United States and Iran. He also called for discussions involving Iran, Gulf countries, and the mediating states.
Guterres further emphasized that diplomacy offers the necessary path toward a peaceful settlement. He urged all parties to pursue negotiations and prevent further escalation across the region.
The UN General Assembly’s high-level week is scheduled to take place from September 18 to 28, 2026.
