United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is set to visit Pakistan this week for a series of high-level meetings with the country’s top leadership. The visit comes at the invitation of the Pakistani government and is expected to focus on regional developments, multilateral cooperation, and Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and diplomacy.
During his stay in Islamabad, Guterres will meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The UN chief is also expected to hold discussions with senior officials on key international and regional issues.
High-Level Diplomatic Engagements Planned
The visit follows recent meetings between Pakistani leaders and Guterres on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Earlier, Pakistan extended a formal invitation to the UN secretary-general, which he accepted ahead of the planned trip.
Officials expect the discussions to cover Pakistan’s contributions to international peace efforts, regional stability, and the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts. Moreover, the visit highlights the longstanding partnership between Pakistan and the United Nations.
Focus on Disaster Management and UN Operations
Besides official meetings, Guterres is scheduled to visit the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The visit will allow him to review Pakistan’s disaster preparedness measures and ongoing efforts to strengthen resilience after the devastating floods of 2022.
The UN chief will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in Islamabad. Meanwhile, observers view the trip as an important opportunity to reinforce cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations on regional and global challenges.
