UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised Pakistan’s peace initiatives during a UN Security Council debate on Thursday. He said diplomatic efforts remain essential as conflicts intensify across the Middle East and other regions.
The debate followed Pakistan-sponsored Resolution 2788, which the Security Council adopted unanimously in 2025. The resolution strengthens peaceful dispute settlement under the UN Charter through diplomacy and mediation.
Moreover, Pakistan urged countries to prevent conflicts before violence escalates. It argued that diplomacy should remain the first response during rising international tensions.
Guterres urges diplomacy over military solutions
Guterres warned that military action cannot deliver lasting peace during escalating regional conflicts. He stressed that diplomacy offers the only sustainable path toward stability.
Furthermore, he said the Middle East faced worsening instability and dangerous confrontation. He warned that growing tensions risked pushing the region toward an unimaginable crisis.
He also said one conflict continues fueling another across the region. Consequently, political goals become overshadowed by continuing violence and confrontation.
Guterres urged all sides to exercise restraint and protect civilians. He also condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure and called them completely unacceptable.
Additionally, he demanded an immediate end to fighting across the region. He also supported restoring international navigational rights around the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab.
Pakistan’s mediation receives international recognition
Guterres praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts to reduce tensions and encourage dialogue. He urged the international community to strengthen such initiatives for lasting peace.
Meanwhile, he expressed concern over developments in the occupied West Bank. He highlighted settlement expansion, military operations, violence, and large-scale displacement.
Pakistan welcomed the secretary-general’s recommendations during the Security Council debate. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad described the proposals as practical, thoughtful, and forward-looking.
The debate reinforced Pakistan’s commitment to diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution. It also highlighted growing international support for dialogue over military confrontation.
