Dozens of millionaires in the United Kingdom urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to raise taxes on the ultra-wealthy Britishers.
They said rich Britons are in a position to contribute more tax to help the government reinvest in public services and support citizens.
In a letter released today, the millionaires declared their support for higher taxes on affluent people across Britain.
“As millionaires, we have a clear message for you, our new Prime Minister: tax us,” they said.
The letter included support from sports broadcaster Gary Lineker and actress Julia Davies, among other wealthy individuals.
The group, calling itself Patriotic Millionaires, argued that wealth and political influence have remained concentrated among a small section of society.
They said this concentration has harmed Britain, its citizens, democratic institutions and the environment.
Therefore, the group urged the government to introduce stronger measures to reduce economic inequality across the country.
Millionaires Call Higher Taxes a ‘Basic British Value’
The group said additional tax revenue could help reduce inequality and strengthen public infrastructure.
Moreover, they said the funds could support small businesses and improve opportunities for people facing financial difficulties.
The millionaires argued that Britain needs greater investment to create a fairer and more stable society.
Lineker, a former professional footballer, said wealthy people could afford to contribute more as many Britons struggle with rising living costs.
Meanwhile, the group urged Burnham’s government to treat wealth taxation as part of its broader economic strategy.
They also described contributing more through taxes as a basic British value and called for policies that benefit society as a whole.
