US President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine may need someone other than President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to negotiate an end to the war with Russia. He criticised Zelenskyy’s approach and argued that the conflict should have ended much earlier.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the war had caused enormous loss of life. He also accused the Ukrainian leader of doing little to advance peace efforts.
Trump Questions Zelenskyy’s Role in Peace Talks
Trump said Zelenskyy should have secured a better agreement earlier in the conflict. He argued that Ukraine had suffered heavy losses and needed a different approach to negotiations.
The US president also suggested that Zelenskyy might not want the war to end. However, he did not provide evidence to support that claim.
Trump maintained that his priority was to stop the fighting and prevent further deaths. He also complained that Washington had provided substantial assistance to Ukraine without receiving enough in return.
Proposed Trump-Putin-Xi Meeting Raises Questions
Trump also discussed a possible trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He said the leaders could discuss nuclear weapons and disarmament.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Putin had proposed such a meeting for next month. The report said the discussions could also address the war in Ukraine.
When reporters asked whether he would meet Putin and Xi without Zelenskyy, Trump said he would pursue any opportunity to end the conflict.
However, the proposed meeting remained a possibility rather than a confirmed diplomatic event.
Ukraine Criticises Easing of Sanctions on Russia
The remarks come amid wider debate over Washington’s approach to Moscow. Zelenskyy has criticised any easing of sanctions against Russia without a clear and lasting reduction in hostilities.
He argued that relaxing restrictions without concrete steps towards de-escalation would signal weakness.
Meanwhile, Trump said Russia and China had offered limited support to Iran despite their close ties with Tehran.
Diplomatic Efforts Face Uncertainty
Trump’s comments highlight continuing disagreements over how to end the war. Washington has indicated its willingness to explore different diplomatic channels, while Kyiv has stressed the need for lasting security guarantees.
Whether a new negotiating arrangement emerges remains unclear. For now, the war and the search for a settlement continue to shape relations among the United States, Ukraine, Russia and China.
