The UK Green Party has voted to define Zionism as racism, adopting the policy at its annual conference amid growing debate over Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Party members approved the motion by 1,022 votes to 813. Under the new policy, Zionism will be treated in the same way as other forms of racism. The party also supports creating a single democratic Palestinian state across historic Palestine.
The decision comes as the Greens gain support under leader Zack Polanski, attracting voters who are dissatisfied with the Labour government’s position on Israel and Gaza.
However, the vote exposed divisions within the party. Polanski did not participate in the vote, while at least three of the Green Party’s five MPs opposed the motion. Earlier, Polanski had described the displacement and killing of Palestinians as racism.
A Green Party spokesperson said the issue had generated a serious and deeply felt debate among members.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry strongly criticized the decision, arguing that the policy crossed the boundaries of legitimate political debate. It urged British political parties, particularly the governing Labour Party, to reject the resolution.
The vote comes amid continued international scrutiny of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. UN investigators have accused Israel of committing genocide, citing mass killings, starvation, serious harm and widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure.
The Green Party’s decision is likely to intensify political debate in Britain over Israel, Palestine and the UK’s foreign policy.
