Britain is not part of the conflict against Iran and supports a diplomatic solution, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during a telephone conversation.
The discussion came amid rising tensions across the Middle East. It also followed Iran’s warning against British support for possible US military operations.
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Araghchi said any cooperation with countries involved in military action against Iran was unacceptable. He argued that international law could hold such states responsible for facilitating attacks.
Iran Warns Against Military Cooperation
Araghchi said countries allowing their territory or military facilities to support attacks could be viewed as aggressors. Consequently, he maintained that targeted states would have the right to self-defence under international law.
The Iranian minister urged Britain to reconsider policies that could assist future military operations. His remarks specifically referred to the possible use of British military bases.
Tehran Criticises UK’s Recent Policies
During the call, Araghchi criticized Britain’s decision to classify Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a national security threat. He also condemned what he described as British support for US and Israeli military actions.
Furthermore, Araghchi called London’s recent approach toward Tehran unfair and urged policy changes. He argued that US and Israeli actions had fueled the current regional crisis.
The Iranian minister also claimed Tehran negotiated in good faith and accepted a ceasefire memorandum on June 18. However, he alleged the United States failed to honor its commitments, preventing the agreement from taking effect.
