Britain has charged two Iranian nationals with terrorism offences over an alleged plot targeting Manchester’s Jewish community ahead of Yom Kippur, raising further concerns about suspected Iranian activity in the country.
Rahman Salehi, 35, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, were charged with preparing to commit or assisting another person in carrying out an act of terrorism in Manchester.
Counterterrorism police said the men allegedly attempted to obtain components and equipment for an improvised explosive device and carried out reconnaissance of potential targets. Investigators also alleged that they had contact with an overseas third party who may have been in Iran.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said Iran posed a range of serious security threats to Britain and accused the regime of targeting Jewish communities and critics abroad. Tehran has repeatedly denied such allegations.
The two men reportedly arrived in Britain by small boat from Europe several years ago. One had been granted asylum, while the other had an active asylum claim.
They were due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.
The charges come amid heightened concerns over antisemitism in Britain following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and the subsequent Gaza war.
Police stressed that the Manchester case was not connected to a separate suspected Iranian plot involving RAF Fairford, where a dual British-Iranian national was arrested on Thursday.
Authorities said the latest alleged plot had caused concern within the Jewish community during the High Holy Days.
