A remarkable story of courage and identity unfolded in Karachi when UK-based solo biker Gul-i-Afshan Tariq arrived to promote women empowerment and cultural understanding. She reached the historic Quaid-i-Azam House Museum, where officials and women bikers welcomed her warmly.
Dressed in armoured riding gear, she carried herself with confidence. At the same time, she spoke fluent Urdu, which surprised many attendees. Her presence immediately reflected a blend of Western travel experience and deep Pakistani roots.
Her journey goes far beyond tourism. Instead, it focuses on breaking stereotypes about Pakistan and women riders.
From Sargodha Roots to Global Roads
Although Gul now lives in Manchester, her journey began in Sargodha. Later, she moved abroad for higher studies. During her time overseas, she often encountered negative perceptions about Pakistan.
However, instead of accepting those narratives, she chose to challenge them. She began representing Pakistan at international biking events. Consequently, she introduced global audiences to Pakistan’s growing community of women bikers.
Her project, “Wheels for Freedom,” reflects that mission. Through it, she promotes women empowerment, cultural exchange, and global unity. In addition, she is working on a book that documents her experiences.
She shared that travel has taught her resilience. Moreover, it has helped her understand how powerful storytelling can be in changing perceptions.
A Motorcycle Named ‘Niki’ and a Journey Across Borders
Gul rides a BMW 310GS motorcycle, which she lovingly named “Niki.” The name comes from Greek mythology and represents victory. Importantly, the bike symbolizes her personal independence and strength.
Over time, she traveled across several European countries. She explored routes through France, Switzerland, and Italy. Along the way, she met supporters who admired her courage.
While traveling through Turkey, she experienced strong hospitality from Pakistani communities. Interestingly, many people refused to let her pay for accommodation, which deeply moved her.
Despite these positive experiences, her journey also faced challenges. She planned visits to Syria, Iraq, and Iran. However, security risks forced her to change her route.
Eventually, she left her motorcycle in Bulgaria due to travel restrictions. After that, she flew to Pakistan and continued her journey on a locally arranged Zongshen RX3.
Pakistan Tour, Women Empowerment, and Future Plans
Upon arrival, women bikers in Karachi welcomed her at Hill Park. Additionally, officials from the Sindh Culture and Tourism Department organized a reception in her honor. Managing Director Feyaz Ali Shah praised her efforts and called her a strong example of women empowerment.
He also emphasized that her journey highlights Pakistan’s peaceful and hospitable image. According to him, her travel content will help reshape international perceptions.
Meanwhile, Gul plans to continue her tour across Pakistan. She intends to ride to Hyderabad, Sukkur, Multan, Lahore, and the Northern Areas. Furthermore, she aims to document every part of her journey through videos and writing.
She also expressed hope for progress in regional peace efforts. In particular, she referred to ongoing diplomatic talks in Islamabad and wished for positive outcomes.
Finally, she plans to attempt travel to Iran again in the future. Despite obstacles, she remains committed to her mission of connection through travel.
Her journey demonstrates how one rider can challenge stereotypes, build bridges, and inspire change across continents.
