UK Banks
The United Kingdom has “de-banked” numerous Muslim account holders without disclosing reasons. The banks in the UK are closing around 1,000 accounts daily.
The issue came into focus when the Cordoba Foundation, a British think tank, could not make payment for a centrally organized forum in London. The forum was to discuss political tensions in Tunisia.
Anas Altikriti, the group’s leader, stated that attempts to pay the venue provider and suppliers were repeatedly rejected. Anas said that contributions from donors to their NatWest account were also declined.
Altikriti remarked, “Out of the blue, we discovered the closure of our business accounts. Bank gave no notification or explanation to us.”
Altikriti revealed that he hadn’t received any correspondence from the bank. Upon inquiring with his customer representative, they conveyed their inability to access specifics about the account closure. They only informed him that the account had been shut down.
On July 27, 2023, Altikriti shared on X (formerly Twitter), “Almost nine years ago today, I received this letter from my 29-year-old HSBC bank. The bank also sent identical letters to my then-wife and two sons (aged 15 and 12).
Since then, NatWest Business, RBS Help, LloydsBank, and Santanderuk have all closed my accounts, without any explanation, notice, or right to appeal. Numerous others have rejected my attempts to open new bank accounts with them.”
Furthermore, Altikriti’s personal accounts in the Royal Bank of Scotland, under the ownership of the NatWest Group, were also being closed. Once again, the bank failed to supply any details.
