School Bus Overturns During Return Journey
A school trip ended in tragedy in eastern Uganda after a bus carrying children crashed, killing 20 pupils and one adult.
The accident occurred on Thursday night in Kapchorwa District. The bus was returning to Kampala after an educational visit to Sipi Falls, a popular tourist destination known for its waterfalls.
The vehicle belonged to King David Junior School in Kampala. It was carrying pupils, school representatives and other adults when the crash occurred.
According to preliminary police findings, the driver lost control of the bus. The vehicle left the road, struck a large roadside stone and overturned.
Uganda Police confirmed that 21 people died in the crash. The victims included 20 schoolchildren and one adult man.
Images released after the incident showed the bus lying on its side with extensive damage. Its roof had been torn open, leaving seats and other parts of the interior exposed.
Emergency responders, police officers and local residents rushed to the scene. Survivors were removed from the wreckage and transported to nearby medical facilities.
Several Children and Adults Taken to Hospitals
Police said three adult men and several children sustained injuries. However, authorities did not immediately provide the complete number of injured passengers.
The survivors were taken to local hospitals for emergency treatment. Officials had not released details about their conditions at the time of the initial announcement.
Authorities also did not immediately disclose the ages and identities of the children who died. Families were being contacted as officials completed identification and other legal procedures.
The crash has left the school community and affected families in deep grief. The children had been returning from an educational tour when the journey ended in disaster.
Investigators are examining the mechanical condition of the bus, the driverโs actions and the road environment. Police stressed that the early account remained preliminary and that the exact cause had not yet been established.
Officials are also expected to determine the speed of the vehicle before the crash and whether safety requirements for transporting schoolchildren were followed.
No conclusion has been announced about criminal responsibility. Any further action will depend on evidence collected during the investigation.
Crash Renews Concern Over Ugandaโs Road Safety Crisis
The fatal school bus accident has renewed concern about road safety in Uganda.
The country recorded 25,107 road crashes in 2024. Of these, 4,434 were classified as fatal incidents. Police figures show that 5,144 people lost their lives on Ugandan roads that year.
The situation worsened in 2025, when road deaths increased to 5,383, according to figures presented by Ugandaโs traffic police.
Speeding, dangerous overtaking, vehicle problems and poor road conditions are frequently linked to serious crashes. Night travel can create additional risks because of reduced visibility and slower access to emergency assistance.
Uganda experienced another major road tragedy in October 2025 when two buses and other vehicles collided on a highway, killing 46 people. Police said the crash occurred during attempted overtaking.
The latest incident is expected to increase calls for stronger inspections of school buses. Parents and road safety campaigners may also demand tighter controls on nighttime school travel, driver qualifications and vehicle maintenance.
Police said investigations into the Kapchorwa crash were continuing. Further information is expected after officers inspect the vehicle, interview survivors and complete inquiries at the scene.
