Leaders strengthen military and security cooperation
ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates and India announced a new Strategic Defence Agreement in Abu Dhabi aimed at expanding bilateral military and security cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement was unveiled during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the UAE, where senior officials discussed defence collaboration, regional security, and strategic partnerships.
Furthermore, the agreement’s title drew attention due to its similarity to the existing Saudi-Pakistan Strategic Defence Agreement, prompting discussion among regional political observers.
Officials from both countries said the new partnership would strengthen defence coordination, military cooperation, technology exchange, and broader strategic engagement.
Meanwhile, Modi received a ceremonial welcome upon entering Emirati airspace, with UAE fighter jets escorting the Indian prime minister’s aircraft before landing in Abu Dhabi.
The gesture highlighted the growing diplomatic and strategic ties between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi.
Regional partnerships continue expanding across Gulf and South Asia
In recent years, India and the UAE have significantly expanded cooperation in trade, energy, investment, and defence sectors.
Analysts believe the latest agreement reflects broader regional efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships amid changing geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and South Asia.
Additionally, military collaboration between both countries has increased through joint exercises, intelligence coordination, and defence industry cooperation.
Political observers also noted that Gulf countries continue diversifying regional alliances while maintaining strategic relationships with multiple South Asian partners, including Pakistan and India.
At the same time, the announcement comes during heightened regional security concerns involving maritime routes, energy infrastructure, and evolving defence partnerships across the Gulf region.
Neither side immediately disclosed detailed operational aspects of the defence agreement. However, officials indicated that future cooperation would likely include defence technology, training programmes, and expanded military coordination.
The development further underscores the UAE’s growing role as a key strategic partner for major regional and international powers.
