Railway teams launch repair and recovery operations after separate derailments disrupt train movement in Punjab
JHELUM: Two trains, including a passenger railcar and a goods train, derailed in separate incidents in Jhelum and Liaquatpur on Thursday, but all passengers and railway personnel remained safe, according to railway officials.
In the first incident, Railcar No. 106 was transiting from Rawalpindi to Lahore when it derailed near the Kantrila Gate area of Jhelum.
Railway sources said the train failed to stop at a crossing near Kala Gujran, causing its engine and three coaches to leave the track.
Passengers Leave Site Using Private Transport
Officials said the derailment did not block the main railway line because the affected coaches remained on the crossing track. Consequently, the main track continued operating normally.
Railway technical teams immediately reached the location and started repairing the affected infrastructure and dealing with the derailed coaches.
Meanwhile, passengers chose not to wait for alternative railway arrangements and independently left the accident site using private transport to continue their journeys.
Authorities reported no deaths or injuries in the Jhelum derailment.
Eleven Goods Train Coaches Derail in Liaquatpur
In a separate incident near Samma Satta, 11 coaches of a goods train derailed near Feroza railway station in Liaquatpur on Thursday.
Railway officials rushed to the scene and introduced temporary operational arrangements to maintain train movement. Subsequently, authorities diverted trains travelling on the up track to the down track.
Officials said an overshoot occurred after the track was not changed, leading to the derailment. However, authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Furthermore, Pakistan Railways dispatched a rescue train from Samasatta, while a relief train headed towards the accident site from Rohri.
Officials confirmed that the Liaquatpur derailment also caused no casualties.
Railway teams continued recovery operations to remove the derailed coaches, restore the affected track and normalise train operations as quickly as possible.
