Reigning champions Türkiye continued their strong start at the CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship. They defeated Slovenia 3-1 on Sunday in Istanbul.
The victory marked Türkiye’s second consecutive Pool A win in the tournament. They had previously opened their campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Latvia.
Türkiye Take Early Lead Against Slovenia
Türkiye started strongly at Sinan Erdem Sports Hall and controlled the opening set. They secured a 25-21 victory to take an early advantage.
However, Slovenia quickly responded in the second set. They improved their performance and levelled the match with a 25-22 win.
The setback did not affect Türkiye’s confidence. Instead, the European champions regained control in the third set.
Türkiye dominated the set and secured a comfortable 25-17 victory. They then carried that momentum into the fourth set.
The hosts maintained their pressure and eventually won the final set 25-16. As a result, Türkiye completed a 3-1 victory over Slovenia.
Vargas Leads Türkiye’s Scoring
Melissa Vargas played a key role in Türkiye’s successful performance. She finished the match as her team’s leading scorer with 19 points.
Ilkin Aydin also made an important contribution with 13 points. Meanwhile, Zehra Gunes added another 12 points for the defending champions.
For Slovenia, Masa Pucelj led the scoring with 17 points. However, her efforts could not prevent Türkiye from securing the victory.
Türkiye’s ability to recover after losing the second set proved crucial. The champions responded strongly and controlled the final two sets.
Türkiye Face Hungary Next
Türkiye will now turn their attention to their next Pool A match. The defending champions are scheduled to face Hungary on Monday.
Another victory would further strengthen Türkiye’s position in the group. Their opening two wins have also provided valuable momentum early in the competition.
The reigning champions will aim to maintain their consistency against Hungary. Meanwhile, Slovenia will look to bounce back in their upcoming fixture.
