Modernised warship highlights Tรผrkiyeโs naval capabilities and NATO role during international fleet gathering
NEW YORK: The Turkish Navy frigate TCG Oruc Reis has represented Tรผrkiye at international maritime events in New York as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence.
The warship, carrying a crew of 176 personnel, anchored on the Hudson River and will remain in New York Harbor until July 8. The visit forms part of a multinational gathering that has brought together military and historic vessels from more than 20 countries.
Captain Kemal Varli, commanding officer of TCG Oruc Reis, said the deployment demonstrates the Turkish Navyโs high operational readiness, professionalism and ability to conduct joint missions alongside allied naval forces. He added that the visit also reflects Tรผrkiyeโs continued commitment to international maritime cooperation and regional security.
Modernisation boosts operational capability
Varli noted that the frigate completed an extensive modernization program in 2025, significantly enhancing its operational capabilities through domestically developed defense technologies.
The upgrades include an advanced combat management system, modern radar equipment, electronic warfare capabilities, upgraded sensors, secure communications and enhanced command-and-control systems. According to the commanding officer, these improvements have strengthened the vesselโs effectiveness during complex naval operations and multinational missions.
He emphasized that the modernization highlights Tรผrkiyeโs growing defense industry and its ability to equip its armed forces with advanced indigenous technologies.
Strengthening international naval cooperation
The Turkish Navy also views the visit as an opportunity to reinforce defense cooperation with allied nations while showcasing its active contribution to NATO operations and global maritime security.
The TCG Oruc Reis, a Barbaros-class frigate commissioned into the Turkish Navy in 1997, remains one of the fleetโs key surface combatants.
Following its participation in the New York events, the vessel is scheduled to depart on July 8 and sail to Dublin for the next stage of its international deployment, continuing Tรผrkiyeโs naval diplomacy and engagement with partner nations.
